A race of the Texas Ultra Series

RACE OVERVIEW

The West Texas Ultra is a 4M, 10K, Half Marathon, and 50K trail run held on Caprock Canyon State Park Trailway in the rugged landscape of West Texas. Featuring an adventure with an open and scenic dirt track course. The race follows a 31-mile out & back course beginning and ending in South Plains TX at the Trailway South Plains Access.

Course Overview

- Surface: All dirt, open trail.
- Course: Caprock Canyon State Park Trailway
- Elevation: Relatively flat with gains and loss of 2496ft for the 50K.
- Location: Caprock Canyons State Park Trailway - 
South Plains Access

- Weather: Historic Average shows 43-71 degrees.

- No Cup Race: We don't serve cups, please make sure to bring your own water-carrying system!

Texas Ultra Series

This series spans all across Texas. All the finisher medals from each race combine to make the State of Texas. Anyone who finishes all the races will receive a special wooden case for all the finisher medals.

Every runner will get a West Texas Ultra short sleeve shirt and a collectible finisher race medal that matches the races in the Texas Ultra Series. 

​

50K finishers will receive a special West Texas Ultra 50K token. The first-place male and first-place female of each distance will get an award. The last person to finish each distance will get a DFL award... "dead freakin last."

​

Any runner who receives all five finisher medals will receive a special case for all of them. You have up to two years (till the end of 2025) to finish all 5 races and get the connecting medals.

Schedule - Saturday, April 13th

Race morning - 6:00AM to 9:00AM (Participants will receive their Bib and Race T-Shirt at packet pickup.)
 

Start Times:

50K Runners - 7:00 AM

Half Marathon - 8:00 AM

10K Runners - 8:30 AM
4M Runners -  9:00 AM

 

Cutoff Time: 7:00 PM (12 Hours)

Race

50K Runners - One out n' back
Runners will run a total of 31.1 miles. The elevation gain is around 2500ft of climbing and descending. Aid/Water stations will be available every 3-6 miles. 50K runners will get to experience going through running "Clarity Tunnel" where there could be some bats. With this, we have a recommendation from the Park Superintendent "There will likely be a build-up of bat guano in the tunnel so as a safety precaution, I suggest informing runners to walk through the tunnel as well as to utilize the tire tracks as their path through it so as to minimize the amount of guano dust in the air." Half Marathon Runners - One out n' back

Runners will run a total of 13.2 miles. The elevation gain is around 551ft of climbing and descending. Aid/Water stations will be available every 3-6 miles.

 

10K Runners - One out n' back

Runners will run a total of 6.4 miles. The elevation gain is flat with around 79ft of climbing and descending. Aid/Water stations will be available at the 3.2 mile turn around point.

4M Runners - One out n' back

Runners will run a total of 4 miles. The elevation gain is flat with around 33ft of climbing and descending. Aid station will be available at the finish.


Every runner will get a West Texas Ultra Craft short sleeve shirt and a collectible finisher race medal that matches with the other Texas Ultra Race medals. 50K Finishers receive a unique 50K token. 

 

The first-place male and first-place female of each distance will get an award. The last person to finish each distance will get a DFL award... "dead freakin last."

Trail Markers
Since the trailway is already marked, there will be no markings on it except for the turnarounds and intersections. Signs with arrows will be used to show which way to run.

Aid Station
There will be four aid/water stations. The miles in (parenthesis) are referring to the 50K distance on the way back.

Main Aid Station (Start & Finish)
The aid station will be manned by a few volunteers and will have hot cocoa, water, naked-flavored Tailwind (electrolytes), sodas, & bananas.


Creek Water Station (Mile 3.2 & 27.8)
This water station will have water & tailwind. This station will not be manned.

Johnfarris Aid Station (Mile 6.6 & 24.4)

The aid station may be manned by a few volunteers and will have water, naked-flavored Tailwind (electrolytes), sodas, bananas, oranges, pickles, chips, Oreos, pretzels, nuts, animal crackers, bacon & grilled cheeses. This aid station, like the rest of the course, has zero road access.

Tunnel Water Station (Mile 12.5 & 18.5)

This water station will have water & tailwind. This station will not be manned.

Lodging - Plainview TX is the nearest city with good quality lodging. The city is 25 min from start/finish area. 

​

"The Trailway stretches from the west, at South Plains on top of the Caprock Escarpment, to the east at Estelline in the Red River Valley. It spans three counties (Floyd, Briscoe and Hall), crosses 46 bridges, and passes through Clarity Tunnel, one of the last active railroad tunnels in Texas."
